Case Description

The shaft sinking method is the most common approach for accessing deep mineral deposits. It involves excavating a vertical passage from the surface down to the ore body, creating a vital connection between underground workings and the surface for transporting ore, waste rock, personnel, and equipment.

Conventional Shaft Sinking Cycle

This process follows a continuous cycle of drilling, blasting, mucking, and hoisting.

Drilling: Workers use rock drills or shaft jumbos (umbrella rigs) to drill blast holes into the rock face at the shaft bottom. The hole pattern is carefully designed to achieve optimal rock fragmentation.

Blasting: Explosives are loaded into the holes and detonated, breaking the rock into smaller pieces. Ventilation systems then clear the shaft of fumes and dust.

Mucking: This is the most time-consuming step, often accounting for over 50% of the entire cycle. Mucking machines (such as center rotary grab loaders) scoop up the broken rock and load it into sinking buckets.

Hoisting: The loaded buckets are hoisted to the surface by shaft sinking hoists or winches. The rock is dumped, and the empty bucket is returned to the shaft bottom for the next load.

This cycle repeats continuously until the shaft reaches the designed depth. During excavation, temporary or permanent support structures are installed to stabilize the shaft walls and ensure safe working conditions.

Hoisting equipment is essential to shaft sinking. Without reliable hoists and winches, the entire operation would come to a halt. During the mine construction phase, they handle:

Personnel access to and from the shaft

Transport of waste rock and ore

Delivery of concrete and construction materials

Special Methods for Challenging Ground Conditions

When shafts pass through water-bearing formations or unstable ground, special techniques such as the freezing method or grouting method are used to stabilize the ground before excavation begins.
